Please post your thoughts about this course below. What did you like about it? What didn’t you like about it? Would you recommend this book study to a colleague?
I really enjoyed this book. I took away a lot of new ideas to think about. This is definitely a book I would recommend to others. Thank you for the course. I really liked the videos that were included in the course.
I enjoyed this book. I feel like there were some excellent selling points on why to get rid of textbooks. Other than the Ken Robinson TED- which I found offensive, I liked the class.
I liked this course. I love when the authors share "outside-the-box" thinking! This book did just that. Some of the technology that was shared is getting a bit dated at the moment. I am wondering how many of the examples/platforms no longer exist or hand been bought out by other companies. It was still a good read. If a colleague asked soon if they should take this course, I would say yes. Maybe the author will come out with a version 2?
The course itself was well made, I however, would not recommend this book specifically to my colleagues. I think a lot of the information is dated, and many of the teachers in my community are using technology well, and not relying on their textbooks in their classroom. I also think Matt has good ideas and information, but his viewpoint from teaching high school presents many ideas that would be hard to apply in an elementary-level classroom. I feel I've learned more about technology & teaching outside the textbook from collaborating with peers and getting into different classrooms to sub or observe. It is great to see the current tools being used effectively by others in the community - I think he'd agree with this idea, though, based on his chapter "You Are Your Own Best PD."
I liked that this course provided opportunities to reflect on my teaching practices and encouraged me to think outside the box. I also enjoyed the TED Talks paired with each chapter, which made the concepts more engaging and relatable but outdated.
The book really did make alot of sense to me and I think alot of was interesting because of my position as tech coordinator. I also thought it was interesting that some of us as educator were "pushed" into this way of thinking because of our time spent online learning during COVID. As trying as that time was it did force some of us as educators to become more technological in our lessons and instruction.
This book resonated with me a great deal as an educator. It was interesting and useful because it offered up many ideas/tools for me to improve upon that I was already doing in addition to completely new ideas I had never thought of. Technology is in our lives and its in our student's' lives. I guess the only thing I didn't always agree with about the book was how the old way is no longer useful. I don't think getting rid of the old way completely is the solution just as going completely all tech is, but this book did a great job of showcasing the benefits that technology can offer and drove home that it is here to stay so we need to find more creative ways to incorporate it into our lessons.
I really enjoyed this book. It really hit home with me about how if you are teaching the standards it doesn't matter where you get the content or how learning is assessed.
As always, I like the setup and format of these book studies. I also appreciate how the book studies they use are relevant to current teaching strategies today.
I did enjoy this course. I think it is always important as a teacher to take time to think about your craft and bring in different information. I also liked the TED talks since they brought in different perspectives. As with all information related to technology things are quickly changing, so some things were a little outdated.

This was a great course. I am glad I took the time to read this book and process through the blog questions. I like that I was able to work at my own pace and the fact that the topics allowed me to think about my classroom and what I could do differently. The TED talks were nice additions to the topics. It is nice to listen to speaker from time to time due to the energy and passion they bring to their topics. I would definitely recommend this book study to a colleague. Thank you so much for developing this course. I learned a lot!
Given the change in the outlook about technology and youth education as well as the rise of AI in our world changing the professional tech landscape, I would NOT recommend this book as more research is encouraging a return to more low-tech classwork and classroom activities.
As I continue to work through the activities, I am continually reminded that these are not things that I want to implement. I had not bought this book or the course thinking it would be so tech driven, but rather about how to incorporate non-text, supplemental material and learning activities into my classroom. Perhaps I was naive, but I was looking for something else from this course.
And an admittedly really picky dislike - the font and page numbers of this book are difficult to see and determine - makes looking for chapters and sections very cumbersome.
